Each year thousands of vacancies for school teachers become available in the United States. Many of these vacancies remain untaken due to shortage of well-qualified teachers.

To meet the demand for increased number of teacers, trained teachers are brought from overseas. It is not uncommon to see teachers from India, Philippines, Colombia, Sri Lanka and the African continent teaching in various schools in the United States.

Fewer than half of all teachers in the U.S. who teach math have a major or minor in math, and 28% of math teachers (and 18% of science teachers) lack state certification in their field. This shortage comes at a time when the expectations for what students should know in math and science are rising. According to the Urban Teacher Challenge, nearly all the urban districts surveyed see an immediate demand for teachers in mathematics (95%) and science (98%).

There is always a high demand for teachers in the subject of Mathematics and Science and one can never find enough teachers to fulfill this gap between demand and supply.

The minimum eligibility requirements for undetaking a job in teaching are:

  • A bachelor degree in the subject you want to teach.
  • A bachelor degree in Education. (for foreign teachers)

If you fulfill these criteria you are eligible to teach in United States. However you require a state license, i.e a Teaching Certification from the state in which you want to teach.

PRAXIS is an examination recognized by almost all the States in USA for Teaching Certification. And TeachNetwork can help you in clearing this examination.

Needless to say, the opportunities multiply manifold if you have cleared the Praxis examination.

Teaching in United States is truly a rewarding experience, as is evident from the opinions of teachers below.
